Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals that are emitted from certain solids and liquids as gases. VOC’s include a variety of these chemicals known to have potential adverse health effects for people exposed to long-term or elevated levels of these compounds.

Higher concentrations of VOC’s are more consistently found indoors rather than outdoors. These compounds are widely used ingredients found in modern homes and buildings in everyday household products being used. Some of these common sources are paints, paint strippers, and other solvents; wood preservatives; aerosol sprays; cleaning supplies, disinfectants and pesticides; air fresheners; cosmetics; stored fuels and automotive products; hobby supplies; dry-cleaned clothing; building materials and furnishings; glues and adhesives.
